Credit card with free travel insurance - that's a thing!?

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

I've had credit cards for a long time, but only recently did I find out that I could have a credit card with free travel insurance. I simply didn't even know that was a thing.

Now? It's one of my favorite credit card benefits that I can't imagine traveling without! See below for a detailed breakdown on the different types of travel insurance you can find as credit card benefits.

If you're considering getting a credit card with free travel insurance:

A high-level explanation of the various types of travel insurance:

  1. Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance: This covers non-refundable trip expenses if you have to cancel or cut your trip short due to covered reasons like illness or severe weather.

  2. Travel Medical Insurance: Provides coverage for medical emergencies while traveling, such as hospital stays, doctor visits, and medications.

  3. Lost Luggage Insurance: Reimburses you for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and its contents during your trip.

  4. Trip Delay Insurance: Offers compensation for expenses incurred due to extended travel delays, such as meals and accommodations.

  5. Rental Car Insurance: Covers damage or theft of rental cars when you pay with the credit card.

  6. Travel Accident Insurance: Provides a benefit in case of accidental death or serious injury during your trip.

  7. Emergency Evacuation Insurance: Covers expenses related to emergency evacuations, often due to medical reasons.

  8. Purchase Protection: Some credit cards offer coverage for items bought during your trip, protecting them against damage or theft.

  9. Travel Assistance Services: Offers access to 24/7 assistance for travel-related emergencies, like lost passports or legal issues.

  10. Extended Warranty: Extends the warranty on certain purchases made with the card, useful for travel gadgets and electronics.

Remember, the specific coverage and terms can vary greatly between credit cards, so it's crucial to read each card's policy to understand what it includes and any limitations or conditions that may apply.
